Theory Guidelines
LEVEL 5

NOTATION OF PITCH:
  • Identify and draw: 1st, 2nd, 3rd line and space notes above and below the treble staff and bass staff
NOTATION OF RHYTHM:
  • Identify and draw: Dotted quarter note, eighth note dotted quarter rest, eighth rest
  • Complete: Examples of notation in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 using notes and rests studied thus far
MAJOR SCALES:
    Write the pattern of whole steps and half steps used in a Major scale. (1 - 1 - 1/2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1/2 or W - W - H - W - W - W - H)
KEY SIGNATURES AND SCALES:
  • Identify and draw: All Major keys up to and including 2 sharps and 2 flats
  • Draw scales one octave ascending. Use whole notes. Use accidentals as needed.
HARMONIC STUDY:
  • Identify and draw: Triads (chords) in root position for Major keys up to and including 1 sharp and 1 flat
INTERVALS:
  • Identify: 4th and 5th (no distinction of perfect), Major 2nd, minor 2nd, Major 3rd, minor 3rd above any note
TERMINOLOGY:
  • ff: fortissimo, very loud
  • pp: pianissimo, very soft
  • D.S.: Dal segno, from the sign
  • D.S. al Fine: return to the sign and play to Fine
  • accent: emphasis or stress
  • allegretto: slower than allegro and faster than moderato
  • triad: a chord of three tones
  • dolce: sweetly
  • accelerando (accel.): gradually faster
  • ledger (leger) lines: lines added above or below the staff to increase the range
  • loco: to play as written, used after the 8va sign
  • diatonic scale: a scale of whole steps and half steps
  • contrary motion scale: a scale played with both hands moving in the opposite direction
  • parallel motion scale: a scale moving in the same direction
MUSICAL EXAMPLE: Identify any of the concepts studied thus far in a musical example

AURAL AWARENESS:

Identify:
  • select the rhythm pattern or melody played
  • accelerando or ritard in a melody
  • tempo as andante or allegro
Distinguish:
  • sound of two tones - 4th or 5th, Major 2nd or Major 3rd
Complete:
  • add note(s) to complete a rhythm pattern
  • a melody within the staff
  • place a fermata or an accent in the melody
  • tones in a Major scale
