Theory Guidelines
LEVEL 6

NOTATION OF PITCH:
  • Identify and draw: Enharmonic spelling of notes
NOTATION OF RHYTHM:
  • Identify and draw: Three eighth notes, four sixteenth notes, two sixteenth notes
  • Complete: Examples of notation in 3/8, 6/8, 9/8 using notes and rests studied thus far
KEY SIGNATURES AND SCALES:
  • Identify and draw: All Major keys up to and including 3 sharps and 3 flats
  • Draw scales one octave ascending. Use whole notes. Use accidentals as needed.
HARMONIC STUDY:
  • Identify and draw: Triads (chords) in root position for all Major keys up to and including 3 sharps and 3 flats
  • Identify and draw: Major and minor 2nds and 3rds above any note
TERMINOLOGY:
  • adagio: slow, slower than andante
  • a tempo: return to original tempo after ritard or accelerando
  • con spirito: with spirit
  • marcato (marc.): with emphasis
  • giocoso: happy or joyful
  • poco a poco: little by little
  • common time: indicated by 4/4 or C
  • I, tonic: first degree of the scale
  • IV, subdominant: fourth degree of the scale
  • V, dominant: fifth degree of the scale
  • enharmonic: notes spelled differently but sound the same
  • root: the note of the triad (chord) that gives the triad its name
EXAMPLE: Identify any of the concepts studied thus far in a musical example

AURAL AWARENESS: (Same as Level 5)

Identify:
  • select the rhythm pattern or melody played
  • accelerando or ritard in a melody
  • tempo as andante or allegro
Distinguish:
  • sound of two tones - 4th or 5th, Major 2nd or Major 3rd
Complete:
  • add note(s) to complete a rhythm pattern
  • a melody within the staff
  • place a fermata or an accent in the melody
  • tones in a Major scale
