| Aural Tests are identical to the guidelines listed for other theory tests. String students will be tested on the same materials as listed in the guidelines with the following exceptions:
LEVEL 3
NOTATION OF PITCH:
- Identify and draw:
Violin: any note on the Treble staff
Viola: any note on the Alto staff
Cello: any note on the Bass staff
TERMINOLOGY:
LEVEL 4
KEY SIGNATURES:
- Identify:
Violin: A major, D major, G major
Viola, Cello: D major, G major, C major
TERMINOLOGY:
- Omit: 8va
- Add:
1. pizzicato- to pluck the strings with a finger
2. arco- play with the bow
- Change:
1. slur- two or more notes of different pitches played with one bow stroke
LEVEL 5
NOTATION OF PITCH:
- Identify and draw:
Violin: 1st, 2nd, 3rd line and space notes above the treble staff; 1st, 2nd line and space notes below the treble staff
Viola: 1st, 2nd, 3rd line and sapce notes above the alto staff; 1st line and space notes below the alto staff
Cello: 1st, 2nd, 3rd line and space notes above the bass staff; 1st, 2nd line and space notes below the bass staff
KEY SIGNATURES:
- Identify and draw: all major keys up to and including 3 sharps and 1 flat
TERMINOLOGY:
- Omit: triad, loco
- Add:
1. double stop- the playing of 2 notes at the same time
- Change:
1. contrary motion- 2 melodies moving in opposite directions
2. parallel motion- 2 melodies moving in the same direction
LEVEL 6
TERMINOLOGY:
- Add:
1. detache- separate bow strokes, smoothly connected
2. martele (same with the last "e")- a staccato bowing with the bow remaining on the string
3. spiccato- a staccato bowing with the bow bouncing off the string
LEVEL 7
NOTATION OF PITCH:
- Viola: any note on the alto or treble clef
Cello: any note on the bass or tenor clef
TERMINOLOGY:
- Add:
portamento- smooth, expressive slide between two pitches
col legno- striking the strings with the bow-stick instead of the hair
KEY SIGNATURES:
- same as the guidelines for level 7 on the other theory pages
