| Theory tests are given at the District Achievement Auditions.
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
Participation in the Theory Test is optional. All students of OMTA teachers are eligible to enter. Young students MUST have adequate reading skills for tests.
TEACHER ELIGIBILITY
Dues must have been received at MTNA by July 1, 2007 to enter without penalty. A teacher must have current provisional or certified membership in the performance area in which the student is entered. (Associate members are not eligible to enter students.)
THEORY TEST LEVEL
All students will enter the test level as determined by the teacher.
The level of test to be taken may not be changed after the entries have been turned in.
All students scoring above 75 in 2007 must advance to the next level. Students scoring 75 or below may advance to the next level, may repeat the same level, or may drop to the next lower level test.
ENTRY PROCEDURES
Teachers may enroll students for the Theory Test on the same form as the District Achievement Audition.
For those students who choose to take the theory test only, and not enter the District Achievement Audition, the fee is $4.00. The student must enroll for theory on the entry form. These are the only entries that will be accepted.
Any teacher who has students who do not speak or write English or who have special needs because of blindness, deafness etc. may contact the District Chair for arrangements in administering the test.
THEORY OUTLINE
Students will be tested on material in the Theory Outline included in the annual Membership Directory.
It is the responsiblity of the teacher to include any sign or symbol associated with the concepts presented in the categories of pitch, rhythm, key signatures, scales, intervals, harmonic study and terminology.
TESTS FOR STRING STUDENTS
Levels 3-7 will be available 2007-8. Guidelines for Strings Written Theory Tests can be found here.
The aural portion of the test will be identical for all students.
THEORY AWARD
A graduating senior who has taken the theory tests (beginning with the minimum level 8) for four consecutive years with a minimum grade of 80 will receive a special music theory award.
